What are colour type and figure type in ethnic clothing?

Your colour type is your natural palette (the combination of skin tone, eyes and hair), which broadly places you in one of the 4 seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) and guides the choice of harmonious fabric colours.

Your figure type is the particular proportions of your body (broad shoulders, narrow hips, a lightly defined waist and so on), which dictate the choice of silhouette, of length and of where the embroidered patterns sit.

How to choose the colour of a vyshyvanka for your colour type

Every colour type calls for its own temperature and contrast of shades, so that the face looks fresh and healthy.

• «Winter» (cool, high contrast): brilliant white (bleached linen), deep black and indigo are ideal. The ornament should be saturated: ruby, emerald, silver.
• «Spring» (warm, light): choose unbleached cloth (ecru, the colour of natural linen), a cream or peach ground. Threads: grass green, golden, coral.
• «Summer» (cool, muted): smoky grey linen, milk white, dusty pink or pastel blue will suit you. A lovely solution is delicate embroidery in the tone of the cloth itself.
• «Autumn» (warm, deep): choose khaki (olive), terracotta, mustard and deep beige. Ornaments in brick, brown and ochre, worked in wool threads.

The sewn-in belt shapes the waist, while the raglan sleeves, the gathers on the sleeves and the flared gores widen the chest and the hips nicely, creating the right proportions. Choosing for men and teenagers

For larger sizes in men it is critically important to measure both the chest and the waist. If the waist is larger than the chest, we choose the size of the vyshyvanka strictly by the waist! Since a traditional shirt is pulled on over the head, it has to pass completely freely.

For teenagers from size 152 (height 152 cm) upwards, you should already be looking at adult vyshyvanka sizes. Children of this age grow very fast, and adult models allow for the right back width and the right sleeve length. At this stage we do not focus on babies, because for them there is knitted clothing, which usually does not go with an adult family look. Children’s vyshyvankas in our range start at a height of 110 cm.

Important details and expert tips

• The lighting test: judge how the fabric suits your face in diffused daylight only. Artificial lamps in shops have a yellow spectrum that distorts cool palettes («Summer» starts to look like «Spring»).
• A compromise with black: if you are not a «Winter» but very much want a black vyshyvanka, choose models with a deep neckline (like blouse 516-3 on a drawstring), so that the dark fabric does not cast a shadow on the face.
• Shrinkage of natural fabrics: natural linen shrinks by about 5–7% after washing. That happens because natural fibres take in water, swell and lose shape. When buying a vyshyvanka, always check the size chart. So that the piece does not become too small, wash it at 30–40°C, choose a delicate programme, spin at no more than 600–800 rpm and never tumble dry it.
