The word «gerdan» is of Turkic origin and means «neck». These beautiful pieces of multicoloured beadwork were popular as far back as Kyivan Rus. Interestingly, they were worn not only by women: men were glad to decorate their hats with them.

Our foremothers put them on for holidays. It was the fashion to decorate not only the front of the body but the back as well. The chest version had two ends joined by a medallion shaped roughly like a diamond. It could reach all the way down to the waist. 

The back version looked different: a long, narrow band decorated with beads or bugle beads, mostly in red or black. Both were worn at the same time, and several at once.

Interestingly, women also wound these openwork beaded pieces around their heads. 

In the old days pieces made from small bright beads were treated with respect. They could tell you a person's social standing and their age. Every part of the ornament had its meaning:
