Embroidered pieces need gentle care. It extends the life of the garment and keeps its beauty and its character.

• Embroidered clothing is best washed by hand. Vyshyvankas should not be boiled, soaked or wrung out, so the embroidery is not damaged; a little salt can be added to the water to help.
• Pieces embroidered in coloured thread can be washed with a mild detergent without bleach, in warm rather than hot water, or with soap or soap flakes. Before washing it is best to soak the piece in salted water (1–2 teaspoons of salt per litre). Wash in plenty of soapy lather with salt added, then rinse the piece thoroughly.
• Unwanted stains can be removed with a stain remover applied for a few minutes and then rinsed out thoroughly. Do take care with coloured embroidery.
•  You can also wash in a machine on the hand-wash or delicate cycle at 30–40°, in a special laundry bag, with the piece turned inside out.
• Do not overload the machine: the piece must move freely, or the colour of the embroidery and the fabric may suffer and unwanted marks may appear.
• Whether washing by machine or by hand, pieces made from natural fibres need thorough rinsing, so no detergent is left in the fabric; detergent residue ages a garment through oxidation.
• Chiffon should be washed by hand without wringing and hung up while still wet.
• Vyshyvankas should not be wrung out, as that spoils their original look. Simply roll the piece up in a towel so the moisture is drawn out, then lay it flat on a level surface to dry.
• Iron a vyshyvanka with a moderately warm iron from the reverse, preferably through muslin. It can be done while the piece is still slightly damp.
