On Thursday 17 May the holiday takes place — Vyshyvanka Day in Ukraine 2018. It is a bright occasion for the whole country, when a great many people put on national dress and come out onto the streets to join the celebration. A little history

​Ukrainian Vyshyvanka Day is a very young holiday. It was first marked in 2006 on the initiative of a student at Chernivtsi University. She was inspired by a fellow student who often wore an embroidered shirt. The idea was warmly supported by students and the whole teaching staff.

And so for 12 years all Ukraine has celebrated and honoured a national symbol — the vyshyvanka. And not only our compatriots celebrate, but Ukrainians living abroad too. Every year people dressed in elements of the national costume come out onto the streets of Toronto, New York and other cities around the world. In this way they come closer to their homeland.
